If the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created in 1984, they really got popular thanks to the animated series created in the late 1980s. The origin story used in the animated series version is different from the one illustrated in the comic book. Indeed, Splinter is formerly human in the series while he has always been a rat in the book. He was an honorable ninja master who was banished from his clan because of one of his students. The latter set him up in order to take command of the clan which he corrupted and changed into a criminal organization the turtles are fighting against later on.
