Star Trek was created in 1966 in a troubled era of the 20th Century. In the raging Cold War, Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the saga, used Star Trek to carry progressive messages. Racism, sexism, war, religion, technology, all these aspects of society were explored in "The Original Series" of the 1960s. The Vulcans, for example, were a race of formidable warriors who would wage war against other races to expand their empires. But after war almost obliterated their entire species, the Vulcans learned to master their emotions to make sure that their minds would never be clouded again by anger and fear.
