Batman was a dark, mature story in its first comic books releases in the 1940's. But due to establishment of the Comics Code Authority in 1954 which banned gore, excessive violence, and innuendo, Batman became a less menacing, more kid-friendly comic book. This was stretched until the 1970's when Batman rediscovered its maturity. But in the meantime, Batman and his foes were engaging in harmless fights where good always triumphed from evil with some basic morals thrown in at the end of the story. This is the approach that the 1966 TV series took to the caped crusader, making his adventures funny and silly.
