Even if you’re not into rock, Aerosmith is a name you probably already heard. In fact, how could you have missed it for 48 years? Created in 1970, Aerosmith is one of the best American hard rock band and the best-selling one. With multi-platinum albums, dozens of awards and their name in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the band has through it’s almost 50 years long career influenced the rock scene as a whole.
Formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970, the band composed of singer Steven Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Krammer started making a name for themselves in the City of Champions. Singed to Columbia Records in 1972, the band released five legendary albums in the 1970’s, Aerosmith, Get Your Wings, Toys in the Attic, Rocks and Draw The Line. Attaining multi-platinum status and receiving critical and popular approval, these albums cemented Aerosmith’s status as real hard-rock superstars. The songs Dream On and Toys in the Attic are still cited today as some of the best American hard-rock pieces of all times.
However, the success of the band came with a price. Internal conflicts and too common drug addiction problems took their toll on the artists, leading to the departure of guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford in 1979 and 1981. Those were hard times for Aerosmith, who replaced their two lost members released one album, but never coming close their previous success. It was only after the return of the two members in 1984 and their collaboration with Run D.M.C in 1986 for their cover of Walk This Way that the band found their fire back. Introduced to a new audience through this hip-hop/rock collaboration, the band managed to connect again with old and new audiences. Considered as one the greatest, most spectacular comeback in rock & roll history, the band went from success to success for another 10 years, from their 1987 Permanent Vacation album up until their 1997 Nine Lives album.
After that, Aerosmith would keep releasing successful album until their last one of 2013. In the meantime, the band performed live on hundreds of occasions. Their tours, both in the U.S and in the world, attracted thousands of fans every year. Invited on TV, in festivals and for special events, the band performed their hit songs everywhere, making Aerosmith part of the musical landscape for more than 40 years. With their 1998 hit song “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” charting n°1 on Billboard Hot 100, and Steven Tyler’s role as a judge in American Idol from 2011 to 2012, the band managed on multiple occasions to stay relevant as decades went by.
Today, the band is on a “farewell” tour since 2017, which could end in 2021 if the band members’ health allows it. Still selling thousands of tickets for their concerts, the Aerosmith fans are still massive today. After 48 of career, the band’s legacy is amazingly large. From their amazing 1970s debut to their 1980s comeback, the band has accompanied many musicians and many people during their life. Two of the most notable artists recognizing Aerosmith’s influence on their career are Slash, guitarist of Guns N’Roses and Velvet Revolver, and Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx. Stretching their music over decades, the Bad Boys from Boston have deserved their title of America’s greatest rock & roll band.
